Vai na Web is a deep tech movement which has developed an advanced digital programming teaching initiative which was created to provide access for young residents of vulnerable communities in Rio de Janeiro. Forming a fundamental part of our Deep Tech Network, Vai na Web’s programme provides technical training, coaching in professional people skills, and helps to place students in IT positions following completion of the course.

It was a very great pleasure therefore this week to learn that Vai na Web has been nominated as a finalist in the 3rd edition of the Women in Tech Global Awards, which will award women who are impacting technology through transformative initiatives in the digital economy. Vai na Web have been nominated in the “Most Impactful Initiatives” category with four more international projects: Laboratoria, from Peru; Soronko Academy, Ghana; Beenova, from South Africa, and I am the Code, from the UK / Africa.

Vai na Web co-founder and executive director of 1STi Aline Fróes commented that “If we want to thrive in the digital economy, we must guarantee and empower our girls and women to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary for decent and sustainable employment and entrepreneurship”.

Since its formation, one of the aims of Vai na Web has been to contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals by helping to narrow the gender gap in the technology market. Today, 60% of their students are women.

Desirée Queiroz, economist and specialist in the UN SDGs explained that “Vai na Web helps to accelerate initiatives related to gender equality, the quality of education and dignified employment. The programme contributes to five areas of importance to humanity: people, prosperity, peace, partnerships and the planet. In this way, the initiative corroborates the motto of the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development and aims to leave no one behind.”

Maria Moraes Robinson, CEO of Holonomics (Brasil) is one of the executive advisory board member of Vai na Web and also a co-founder of the Deep Tech Network. Commenting on the award she explained how “It is a great joy to see how Vai na Web has developed over the years and is now receiving this much-deserved international recognition. This programme is paving the way to support, train and encourage young programmers, contributing significantly to increased diversity in the digital economy, while developing a profoundly talented new generation who will soon be making their own great contributions to the evolution of design, of the internet and Deep Tech”.

The result of the award will be announced on December 2, in Lisbon, during the Women in Tech® Global Awards. For more information please see the following links:
