Design thinking may have democratised the modern design process over the last two decades, but what it has not achieved is the democratisation of the way of seeing of the designer. This is because when people attend design thinking workshops, Google sprints or any other forms of agile or startup design methodologies, the quality of our seeing and the relationship between our intellects, our observational capacities and our lifeworlds is all but barely addressed.

The notion of lifeworld comes from the phenomenological philosophy of Edmund Husserl who introduced the term in 1936. Once the concept has been fully grasped, it can transform our approach to design by changing the way we think about understanding, observing, analysing, and interpreting behavioural and attitudinal research. …

Dima Yarovinsky is a UX/UI designer who works at ZenCity and who is a student of visual communication at Betzalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem.

In 2018 his project I Agree was showcased in the US at the Visualizing Knowledge exhibition, an event that showcases new talents from the field of Information Design. I graduated in Psychology from Nottingham University in 1992, and there is one experiment which I took part in which I still remember to this very day. The reason is simple — embarrassment.

We were discussing animal cognition in one of our classes, we carried out a simple test as an icebreaker (experiment would be too strong a word). We placed five different coins in a number of felt bags, and and goal was to pick out one specific coin which we were shown and able to play with before dipping our hands in the bags.

The vast majority of my fellow students were able to do this without issue, but for some reason I was really having an off day. In the five attempts I was given, I could not pull out the target coin, I kept pulling out the one most similar in size and weight. …
